Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has inaugurated the Karamoja Emergency Health Operations Center and handed over a state-of-the-art mobile TB clinic to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, enhancing emergency response and access to healthcare in the region.

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has commissioned the Karamoja Emergency Health Operations Centre and handed over a modern mobile TB Clinic to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital.

The facilities are primed to strengthen emergency health services and expanding access to medical care across the Karamoja sub-region.

The ceremony, held on Wednesday at Moroto Regional Hospital, was attended by hospital staff, district leaders, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries.

Speaker Among praised the hospital administration for its professionalism and high standards of cleanliness, highlighting Moroto Regional Referral Hospital as a model among regional hospitals in the country.

“I am impressed by the level of cleanliness and commitment here. I thank the management and board for their professionalism and dedication,” she said.

Ms Among added that the new Emergency Operations Center will improve coordination and rapid response to health emergencies across Karamoja.

“This center will help the hospital connect with communities, monitor health situations, and respond quickly to emergencies,” she said.

Moroto Hospital Director, Dr Stephen Pande, said the commissioning is part of the Ministry of Health’s broader strategy to strengthen emergency health systems and reach underserved communities.

“The mobile TB Clinic will bring diagnostic services closer to remote areas and facilitate early detection of TB, HIV, and related illnesses. It is equipped with modern AI-supported technology to enhance diagnostic efficiency,” Dr. Pande said.

Moroto Municipality Mayor, Ismail Mohammed, welcomed the initiative, saying it aligns with President Museveni’s vision to integrate Karamoja into national development.

“Karamoja was left behind by previous governments, but such initiatives are helping us catch up and improve service delivery,” Mohammed said.

Other dignitaries at the event included Moroto Deputy Resident District Commissioner Justin Tuko, NRM flag bearer for Tepeth County Michael Lokawa Wilson, and members of the Moroto Hospital Board.
